Noriyuki Haga – Ducati Xerox 2009

The World Superbike series headed to France this weekend with Ben Spies and Noriyuki Haga sharing the wins at the Magny-Cours circuit.

Race One

It was Ben Spies on the Yamaha World Superbike that led into the first corner of race one with Max Biaggi, Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam and Michel Fabrizio, all fighting for second place.

Rea on the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda passed the Aprilia of Biaggi going into the hairpin while Haga on the Ducati Xerox slipped past the Stiggy Honda of Haslam, but not for long as Haslam soon retook his position.

Tom Sykes crashed out on the fast, downhill section to Lycee at the Magny-Cours circuit on the second Yamaha World Superbike but managed to walk away from the accident.

With 19 laps of the race to run, Fabrizio put his Ducati Xerox ahead of Haslam to take fifth position while just two laps later, Jonathan Rea suffered some sort of technical problem and drove into the pit lane to retire.

Haga continued to hassle the Italian rider but couldn’t find a way past the Aprilia until on lap 17, Biaggi made the mistake of leaving a gap wide enough for Haga to get through and beginning to chase down the American, who by now had made a gap of 1.3 seconds.

With only 6 laps of the race remaining and Haga was realising that only a mistake by the Yamaha rider would see him in the lead,and unusually the error occurred with Spies running wide and letting Haga slip up the inside and at the front.  Spies soon retook his spot and cut up the inside at the corner exit.  The two riders were racing side-by-side heading down to Lycee but it was Spies who was first at the bend.

Biaggi took the final step of the podium finishing in third place ahead of Fabrizio in fourth and Stiggy Honda rider Leon Haslam in fifth.  In sixth place was Carlos Checa on the second Hanspree Ten Kate Honda, after qualifying in twelfth on the grid, followed by the Suzuki Alstare rider Yukio Kagayama in seventh, Shane Byrne on the Sterilgarda Ducati in eighth, Troy Corser on the BMW Motorrad in ninth and Jakub Smrz on the Guandalini Ducati in tenth.

Race Two

In race two it was Noriyuki Haga on the Ducati Xerox that took the chequered flag, with his eighth win of the season and now leads the championship by 10 points over the Yamaha World Superbike rider Ben Spies.

Haga took the lead from the start while Ben Spies struggled with his machine for the entire race.  After losing the lead to Haga, Max Biaggi was all over the Ducati, making a pass on lap 5 which Haga soon took back.  Biaggi then tried the same move again two laps later, running wide and allowing Jonathan Rea to slip through on the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda.

Rea was soon on the tail of the Ducati and the three top riders swapped places several times over the following laps.  The Hanspree Honda rider finally left enough of a gap to allow the Aprilia through and was forced wide as Biaggi retook his second place.

Ben Spies finished in fourth place followed by Leon Haslam, taking his second fifth position of the day for the Stiggy Honda team.  In sixth place was the Suzuki Alstare rider Yukio Kagayama ahead of Shane Byrne of the Sterilgarda Ducati, Karl Muggeridge on the second Suzuki Alstare, Carlos Checa on the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda and Troy Corser on the BMW Motorrad in tenth.

The two leading riders seemed a bit confused as they crossed the line, both Spies and Biaggi continued racing for another lap, oblivious that the race was over.

The British Superbike rider Leon Camier was denied a finish in both races for the Aprilia team after suffering technical difficulties with his machine.

Noriyuki Haga – Ducati Xerox 2009

Noriyuki Haga claimed his first victory in four-months in race one at Imola yesterday with Michel Fabrizio taking his maiden win of the championship in race two.

Race One

Noriyuki Haga is back in contention for the championship once again, after winning the first race at the Imola round  for the Ducati Xerox team.

Max Biaggi on the Aprilia RSV4, led the race by the end of the first lap after starting from sixth on the grid, he was  followed by Michel Fabrizio, Jonathan Rea and Haga.  Ben Spies was back in fifth place after making contact with the BMW of Troy Corser as they battled to get ahead in the first corner.

On lap 3, Rea on the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda, made an error heading over the crest leading onto the Rivazza complex.  Unable to stop, he shot across the path of Fabrizio and Haga before going into the gravel trap and dropping his machine, once back on his feet he managed to get his bike back on circuit but was now in last place.

As the leading four headed into the distance, Spies struggled to keep up with the three front runners as Biaggi came under pressure from the Ducati of Fabrizio who had re-taken second position from his team-mate Haga.

Haga took the second place slot back on lap 8 as they went into Rivazza, before making the same move two-laps later on Biaggi, who straight away fought back for his position.  Haga finally made the move stick on lap 18 of the race with Fabrizio finding his way past the Aprilia after getting a better run coming out of the final chicane.

Spies who had now made his way back to the front of the riders, also tried to take advantage of Biaggi by following Fabrizio through but the Aprilia rider had already seen him and shut the door.

On the final lap, Biaggi reclaimed his second position at the final bend as he dived up the inside of Fabrizio and took his place with just a one hundredth of a second.

Spies finished in fourth place, five seconds behind Haga followed by Ryuichi Kiyonari on the Ten Kate Honda racing machine who had started in fourteenth on the grid.

Leon Haslam took fifth place on the Stiggy Honda after starting in tenth ahead of Jonathan Rea in seventh and Jakub Smrz for the Guandalini Racing team in eighth.

In ninth was Tom Sykes on the Yamaha World Superbike followed by Australian rider Broc Parkes for the Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team.

Marco Simoncelli crashed out of his debut race after replacing the injured rider Shinya Nakano at the Imola circuit.  Running in fifth place at the start of the race after a bad start, Simoncelli crashed out on lap 10 after losing the front of his Aprilia and was forced to retire.

Race Two

Michel Fabrizio took to the front of the pack in the second race of the day after starting in pole position, followed by Noriyuki Haga, Max Biaggi, Shane Byrne and Jonathan Rea.

Spies got off to a terrible start and was back in sixth position as the race got underway from second on the grid.  He moved into fifth place after an error by Rea on lap 1.

Haga soon passed his team-mate to take the lead as Biaggi made a move on Fabrizio but only until lap 5 when the Ducati was back in front of the Aprilia.

By lap 11, Fabrizio was all over the back of Haga, apparently ignoring team orders, and took the lead going into turn one on lap 13.

Marco Simoncelli, on his debut weekend in World Superbikes, claimed an impressive third place on the second Aprilia Racing machine.  After closing in on his team-mate Biaggi, Simoncelli made a daring move and passed him at the Variante Bassa with some late braking, forcing Biaggi into the gravel which in turn also took Spies through the gravel trap as he was pushed wide as Biaggi rejoined the circuit.

Spies finished in fifth place ahead of Jonathan Rea in sixth, Shane Byrne on the Sterilgarda Ducati in seventh, Leon Haslam on the Stiggy Honda in eighth, Jakub Smrz on the second Sterilgarda Ducati in ninth and Carlos Checa for the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda team completing the top ten.

Race One Crash Nuburgring 2009

Ben Spies is now leading the World Superbike Championship after winning race one and finish second in race two as Noriyuki Haga crashed out.

Race One

The red flags were deployed as race one got underway after John Hopkins on the Stiggy Honda, lost the rear of his machine going into turn one, collecting the pair of Paul Bird Kawasaki riders Broc Parkes and Makoto Tamada on the way.  Both Tamada and Hopkins were taken to hospital with concussion.

At the restart, it was Haga that led the pack across the line followed by Jonathan Rea on the Ten Kate Honda and Spies.

With 16 laps of the race to run, Spies passed Rea but  the Irishman reclaimed the position one lap later before immediately losing it again as he ran wide.  Spies then set about chasing Haga who had managed to create a 1 second gap.

The Yamaha rider made his move on Haga on lap 10 but couldn’t pull away from the Japanese rider until the penultimate lap .

Spies crossed the line to take his twelfth win of the season followed by Haga, who was riding for the first time since suffering a huge crash at Donington Park.

The Hanspree Ten Kate Honda of Carlos Checa crossed the line to take the third step of the podium after holding off his team-mate Jonathan Rea.

The battle for fifth place was taken by Max Biaggi on the Aprilia RSV4, after he had reclaimed the place taken by Leon Haslam a few laps previous.  Haslam finished in sixth for the Stiggy Honda team ahead of Michel Fabrizio on the Ducati Xerox machine.

Troy Corser on the BMW claimed eighth place after running as high as fourth during the race, he was followed by Tom Sykes on the second Yamaha World Superbike and Shane Byrne in tenth on the Sterilgarda Ducati.

Richard Cooper, who was riding as a replacement rider for the BMW man Ruben Xaus, crashed out of the race while running in fifteenth spot.

Race Two

In race two, it was Jonathan Rea on the Hanspree Ten Kate Honda that took his second victory of the season despite a late challenge by Sterilgarda Yamaha rider Ben Spies.

As the lights went out for the start of race two, it was Noriyuki Haga that led the riders into the first corner followed by BMW rider Troy Corser, Carlos Checa on the second Hanspree Honda and Leon Haslam on the Stiggy Honda.

Rea was in seventh place on his Honda as the front leaders headed into the first bend, but passed Spies before the end of lap one.  Carlos Checa passed the BMW of Troy Corser before attempting a move on Haga but ran wide as Rea made his way past Leon Haslam, Michel Fabrizio and Troy Corser.

Carlos Checa again made a move to pass Haga but this time it worked, however, he was unable to keep the pace and  Haga reclaimed his position on the following lap with Rea in his tow as Leon Haslam passed Checa for fourth place.

As Haga passed the Hanspree Honda on lap five at the hairpin, the Japanese rider went slightly wide giving Rea a glimpse of a pass.  As Haga moved back to the racing line he made contact with the Honda and crashed-out.  He was unable to restart his bike and was out of the race and lost his lead in the championship.

Leon Haslam was now sitting in third, moving his way up to second a couple of laps later when he passed the Honda of Carlos Checa.

Ben Spies was now on a charge and passed Checa with twelve laps of the race remaining, Spies then passed Haslam on the inside, forcing the Stiggy rider wide and allowing Checa back through.  Haslam was then passed by Max Biaggi on the Aprilia, demoting the Brit to fifth place.

Jonathan Rea took the chequered flag ahead of  Ben Spies in second and Carlos Checa in third.  Max Biaggi finished the race in fourth place followed by Leon Haslam in fifth and Troy Corser in sixth.

Ryuichi Kiyonari on the Ten Kate Honda Racing machine, finished in seventh place ahead of Tom Sykes on the second Yamaha World Superbike, Michel Fabrizio on the Ducati Xerox in ninth and Yukio Kagayama on the Suzuki Alstare in tenth.

Shane Byrne on the Sterilgarda Ducati crashed out midway through the race and Richard Cooper crashed with only five laps left to run.

Karl Muggeridge

The former Supersport rider Karl Muggeridge, will be on the Alstare Suzuki machine this weekend, replacing the recuperating rider Max Neukirchner at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Neukirchner was advised by doctors to sit this round out and continue with his rehabilitation programme, which will no doubt disappoint his fans at his home race.  Max explained about his two recent operations, one to have screws inserted into his back and another to have a metal plate put into his side, making it more comfortable for the rider who no longer has to wear his body cast.

Muggeridge will ride alongside Japanese rider Yukio Kagayama who understands Max’s frustration at not getting back on the Suzuki and said;

“Last year I missed the race because I broke a bone in my hand after crashing in the Saturday free practice session, so this year I hope that I will be able to do both races at the very least! We have had a long break since the last race and I am itching to get back on my bike again and hungry for some good results. It is a shame that  Max will not be racing this weekend and I would like to wish him a speedy recovery. Nurburgring is not an easy circuit because there are many changes of elevation and some slow corners, but I hope we can find a good bike set-up early on, have a good Superpole; and then a good day on Sunday.”

Neukirchner fully intends to be at the circuit to cheer on Karl and Yukio, although he admitted that it would be hard to watch as he is itching to get back to work.

Karl Muggeridge said;

“Firstly I would like to wish Max all the best and say ‘get well soon mate.’ This coming weekend is a nice opportunity to work with Alstare again. The last time was when I raced Supersport for them in 2001 and it’s good to see that many of the mechanics are the same ones I knew then. That will make my life easier when we start working with the bike on Friday for sure.  The team is not putting any pressure on me at all and have told me to just ride the bike and do the best I can. I have spent some time with the Alstare mechanics and have seen the differences between the bike and the Suzuki I raced earlier this year. I think that the biggest difference will be the handling and the electronics: These days it takes quite a lot of time to understand the electronics and the changes that can be made and the quicker I can understand them, the better it’ll be. I’m really looking forward to the weekend, even though I know it’s not going to be an easy one, but whatever happens I will give it my best shot.”

James Ellison – Airwaves Yamaha 2009

The British Superbike riders and teams were at Cadwell Park this weekend for round nine of the championship, with the Airwaves Yamaha riders Leon Camier and James Ellison taking the wins.

Race One

Simon Andrews on the Confused.com Kawasaki that took to the front as the race got underway but was soon passed by Stuart Easton on the Hydrex Honda.  Camier was running in third place when he tried to make a move on Easton but the Honda rider snatched the place back as he dived up the inside of the Yamaha.  Camier moved into second on the following lap before hunting down Easton and then passing him to create a gap.

Andrews made a mistake going into Charlie’s and was passed by the second Airwaves Yamaha of James Ellison, who had already passed the Buildbase Kawasaki of John Laverty.

Easton, Ellison and Ian Lowry on the Relentless Suzuki by TAS, were fighting each other for the other two steps on the podium, with Easton and Ellison almost touching in their battle for second.  Easton managed to hold off the Yamaha to claim second followed by Elllison in third.

In fourth place was Lowry, scoring his best place this season ahead of the two Confused.com Kawasaki’s of Simon Andrews and Julien Da Costa. The two Kawasaki riders were in a race of their own and after Simon had held his position for most of the race, Da Costa made his way past on the penultimate lap.  On the final lap, Andrews tried to retake his position but was too fast and forced both riders onto the grass.  Andrews secured fifth place ahead of his team-mate who took sixth.

Karl Muggeridge took seventh place for the HM Plant Honda team, holding off the Worx Crescent Suzuki of Sylvain Guintoli as they crossed the line.  John Laverty finished in ninth for the Buildbase Kawasaki team ahead of Gary Mason on the Quay Garage Honda in tenth.

Race Two

Leon Camier crossed the line to take the second win of the day but he was excluded from the race after an incident on the final lap, gifting the victory to his team-mate James Ellison.

On the final lap of the race, Camier’s Yamaha was seen with blue smoke coming from the back.  Black and orange flags were waved but Camier remained on track and continued to the chequered flag where he was  disqualified for not stopping immediately on seeing the flags.

A statement was released by the team, stating that Camier mistakenly believed that he had until the end of the lap to come in.  The team apologised to Leon for the problem on his bike which turned out to be a small oil leak, and thanked him for his dignity and professionalism after learning of the disqualification.

Stuart Easton again took to the front as the race got underway while Camier passed the Buildbase Kawasaki of Laverty, with Andrews following his lead.  Andrews lost the place almost immediately as Ellison slipped up the inside.

On the following lap, Camier took Easton with Ellison making a copycat manoeuvre three laps later as Andrews then passed the Honda of Easton.

On lap 6, the safety car was deployed after the STP MV Agusta of Michael Howarth developed a huge oil leak, leaving marshalls to clean-up the track.  The safety car left the track on lap 9 and Easton made an immediate move on Andrews at Coppice, but Andrews snatched it back before the end of the lap.

On the penultimate lap, Easton moved in front of Andrews to take second place ahead of Easton in third.  Julian Da Costa finished in fourth followed by his team-mate John Laverty in fifth.

The Motorpoint Yamaha rider Chris Walker finished in sixth ahead of Sylvain Guintoli on the Worx Suzuki, Karl Harris on the Hydrex Honda, Gary Mason on the Quay Garage Honda and Tommy Bridewell for Team NB Honda.

Ian Lowry had been in ninth place on the Relentless Suzuki, putting in faster laps than both Easton and Andrews until he crashed out on lap 16.  John McGuiness was another non-finisher after retiring the HM Plant Honda with two laps to run.

Karl Muggeridge – Celani Suzuki 2009

The latest casualty of the economic crisis is the Celani Suzuki team, who have decided not to take part in the next round of the World Superbike Championship at Nurburgring on September 6.

The team are planning to make a come-back for the following three rounds at Imola, Magny Cours and Portimao with a more competitive machine after scoring only 5 points so far this season.

Karl Muggeridge was the initial rider for the team, scoring 4 out of the total 5 points before suffering a cracked vertebrae in a crash at Assen.  Alessandro Polita replaced the injured rider after he was left without a ride when the Suzuki Hoegee team pulled out of the Supersport World Championship.

Muggeridge will be riding as a replacement for the injured Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner.  The team will however have David Giugliano riding for them in the Nurburgring Superstock 1000 FIM cup on the same weekend.

Max Neukirchner – Suzuki Alstare 2009

The Suzuki Alstare rider Max Neukirchner has undergone a second operation to stabilise the damaged vertebrae he suffered in an accident at Imola back in July.

The operation was done in two stages by specialist Dr. Stöckel at a hospital in Chemnitz.  Firstly the broken thoracic vertebra was stabilised by screws and then three days later, the second vertebrae in the lumbar region was set.

One of the main priorities for the young German rider was that the healing process would not be delayed by going ahead with the surgery as he fully intends to race at least one or two more rounds this season.

Max is disappointed that he will not be on the grid for his home race at the Nürburgring, however, he will be attending the event to meet fans and to promote the Suzuki team.

The Australian Karl Muggeridge will be the replacement rider for Max at the next round of the World Superbike Championship on September 6

Leon Camier – Airwaves Yamaha 2009

Leon Camier won all three races at the British Supebike Championship at Brands Hatch over the weekend, giving him a lead in the points standing of 113.5 over team-mate James Ellison for the Airwaves Yamaha team.

The first race of the weekend took place on Saturday with Camier taking the chequered flag ahead of Broc Parkes on the WSB Kawasaki in second and Stuart Easton on the Hydrex Honda in third.

Parkes led the field from the start of the race ahead of Karl Muggeridge on his HM Plant Honda debut and Camier as they headed into Druids.  Parkes team-mate Sheridan Morais, was thrown of his machine as he made an error trying to pass Tommy Hill at Stirling, he was unhurt.

By lap 2, Camier had moved into second place, passing Muggeridge and chasing down the leading man.  On lap 10,  he passed Parkes on the inside going into Druids and pulled away from the pack.

Race 1

Leon Camier led from the start on the Airwaves Yamaha, followed by Broc Parkes and Stuart Easton.  As Camier and Parkes began to pull away from the rest of the pack the red flag came out as David Johnson crashed his Maxxis Yamaha at Hawthorn.

Once the safety car came in Camier was off again followed by Parkes as the two soon created a gap between themselves and Easton.

Tommy Hill finished in fourth ahead of the second Airwaves machine of James Ellison and Karl Harris on the second Hydrex Honda in sixth.

Chris Walker struggled with some sort of problem on the Motorpoint/Henderson Yamaha and retired just before the end of the race.

Race 2

Camier went onto win the third race of the weekend, beating the record number of wins in one season previously held by Niall Mackenzie.

It was Broc Parkes that led the way as the lights went out while Camier got off to a terrible start and dropped back to eighth place.  Karl Muggeridge was in second followed by the second Airwaves Yamaha of James Ellison in third.

Camier started to carve his way through the pack and on lap 3, had passed Stuart Easton, Tommy Hill and Michael Rutter.  On the following lap he nipped up the inside of his team-mate Ellison, and into third place as he began to chase down Muggeridge for second.

After passing the HM Plant Honda rider, Camier set about Parkes and eventually passed him on lap 15 before he once again, headed for the chequered flag for his fourteenth win of the season.  James Ellison managed to take his first podium of the season after passing Easton on lap 12, while John Laverty finished in an impressive fifth position after taking Muggeridge.

HM Plant Honda 2009

The HM Plant Honda British Superbike Team have announced their riders for the next two rounds of the championship on the 7-9 August at Brands Hatch and at Cadwell Park on the 29-31 August.

Original rider Glen Richards, is still recovering from a broken leg and was replaced by Steve Brogan at Mallory Park.  The reigning British Superstock Champion ended the day with an impressive seventh and ninth place and is keen to ride for the team again despite continuing to defend his own title in the Superstock class.  Brogan will share his ride with John McGuinness, who will be taking his place at the Cadwell Park round.

The second team rider Josh Brookes, was given a two race ban at the last round at Mallory Park after being found guilty of reckless riding .

Karl Muggeridge is set to make his British Superbike debut as a replacement for Brookes and is eager to get back on board a Superbike after recuperation for the past few months.  The 35-year-old Australian, broke two vertebrae after a big crash at Assen at the beginning of the year in the World Superbike series while riding for the Celani Team.  On his return at American round, he crashed again bringing out the red flag but escaped with only bruising, he was replaced by Alessandro Polita for the remainder of the season.

The team manager Havier Beltran said;

“Rider changes mid season are never ideal for riders or the team, but we’re in the situation we’re in and we fully intend to just try and make the most of a less than ideal situation and get on with the job. Steve did a superb job for the team at Mallory on his first real taste of a Superbike and we’re confident we can build on that performance at Brands Hatch. But beyond that, Steve needs to be able to concentrate fully on defending his Superstock title, which is why we’ve chosen to field John at Cadwell, instead of Steve again. John is familiar with the HM Plant Honda Superbike from the TT and North West 200 and this, coupled with his strong performance during our team test at Cadwell last week, secured him the BSB seat at the team’s home round. Karl is a rider who has experience of the British series and also Honda, having ridden for us in the Supersport championship a decade ago. He’s also won races at Brands, it’s his favourite circuit and he has experience of the Fireblade from his World Superbike experience. All in all, we feel we’re fielding a strong line-up for the next two rounds.”

Alessandro Polita – Celani Race Team 2007

The  World Superbike rider Alessandro Polita is to remain with the Celani Team for the rest of the season it has been confirmed today.

The Italian rider was bought in as a replacement for the injured Karl Muggeridge at Misano and Donington and after previously riding for the team in 2007.  Having scored a point while replacing Muggeridge he is now to be a permanent fixture in the team garage.

Muggeridge suffered two broken vertebrae in his back after crashing at Assen and was out for the two next rounds before the team decided along with the rider, that it would be better to give him a few more weeks to recover fully.

However, Polita has now been signed-up.  He was left without a ride when the Supersport team Suzuki Hoegee pulled out of the championship after previously losing his ride with the Sterilgarda Ducati team.
